Math 2214 (INX: 93957): Introduction To
Differential Equations |
Text:
Elementary Differential Equations with Boundary Value Problems
By W. Kohler and Lee Johnson, Pearson, 2006.
Final Exam Time: to be
announced
Common-Online Final: The
common online final exam for Math 2214 will be given at the Math Emporium.
Students will have approximately a week to take this online exam. Times will be
announced near the end of the semester.
Prerequisites and Co-requisites: Math 1114, 1206.
Differential equations are at the core of the mathematical description of
natural phenomena and are one of the principal applications of the calculus.
The course introduces important classes of differential equations and
techniques for solving them. Familiarity with these techniques is basic for
studying any discipline of science or engineering. Topics are given in the
syllabus. The emphasis is on understanding and applying but not proving.
Exams: There will be two in-class tests and a comprehensive common
online final exam given at the emporium. No make-up exams will be given for the
in-class tests. If you have a valid reason for missing a test, your grade on
the final will be substituted for that of the missed test. The common final
exam means that a portion of the final is the same for all sections of 2214.
You will have approximately a week to take this online exam. Times will be
announced near the end of the semester.
Homework & Quizzes:
You are required to do all problems in the Department
Assignment Sheet. Homework will be assigned and collected. Every student
should attempt to solve the homework on their own whenever possible, but
students who are unable to do this may discuss the assignments with others.
However, copying is, of course, forbidden. A student who fails to complete more
than two homework assignments will FAIL THE COURSE.
There is a database of 28 online practice quizzes. You are
encouraged to do these quizzes. The graded quizzes will be assigned weekly. Problems
in graded quizzes will come from this database. Any student with special needs
or circumstances should feel free to meet with me during office hours.

If you are not on the class roll that comes out after the last add date, immediately check your schedule at a terminal and start attending the proper section. For no foreseeable reason (computer and registrar personnel mistakes included) will you be allowed to stay in the wrong section or to drop a section for which you are actually enrolled after the last drop date. By simply attending a section you will not be placed on its roll.
